     European Investment Bank affords € 2 million grant to Syrian for financing the infinitesimal projects.

    On 19 January, 2009 Dr. Al-Hussein met Mr. Philippe de Fontaine Vive, the Vice-President of EIB, responsible of EIB's process in the Mediterranean countries accompanied with Mr. Vassilis Bontosoglou, Ambassador of the European Commission.

    Dr. Al-Hussein referred to the good relations with the Bank, which has an important role in the vital projects in Syria especially the hospitals, hoping to achieve more developments in these relations. From his side, Mr. de Fontaine hope that 2009 be a good year of cooperation with Syria, assuring that the Bank policy will never affected by the global financial crisis, as well as he called all Syrian bodies to face the impact of crisis.

    Both sides expressed their satisfaction for the relations between Syria and the European Union and they assured that signing the first letters of the Syrian-European partnership agreement will effect positively on Syria's relations with the European Union countries and all of its institutions.

    The meeting talked about the assistance fields that may be afforded by the Bank, whereas Mr. de Fontaine determined three main fields which are (i)improving the technical infrastructure and developing the Syrian human resource, (ii)evolving the private sector and supporting the infinitesimal projects through the € 2 million grant, and the third field includes the agricultural, tourist and constructions that related to the private sector.

    From his side, Dr. Al-Hussein welcomed the proposals of EIB and indicted to the Unit of small and medium projects that was established in the Syrian commercial bank, he referred also to the new experience of saving bank in financing the infinitesimal projects, expressing the Ministry's readiness to afford assistance in any field to facilitate the job of EIB representatives.

    The Minister talked about the assistance that could be afforded to purchase new planes for the Syrian Air Fleet, here Mr. de Fontaine expressed his desire to help in this field, but the American banning on Syria limits this assistance, so Syria should settle this issue because it's a political not commercial problem. He added that Syria should improve the other transpiration means like trains and seaports.

    Dr. Al-Hussein proposed if the EIB may help in establishing Cancers hospital in Homs, Aleppo and Al-Hasaka. He expressed also Ministry's readiness to finance these projects.
    \r\n
    Mr. de Fontaine urged the Minister to attend the meeting of European and Mediterranean Ministers of Finance which will be hold in 7/7/2009.

    Finally, it's decided that Mr. de Fontaine will meet later the Syrian Prime Minister, Electricity Minister and other official individuals.
